EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the state bedroom in Normanton Park, Rutland. Taken from Giles Worsley's book "England's Lost Houses" this image showcases a piece of architectural history that no longer exists. Built by Henry Joynes for Sir John Heathcote between 1735-40, the house was later altered and enlarged by Kenton Couse in 1763-67. Remodeled once again in 1793 with the addition of a bay, this magnificent structure was unfortunately demolished in 1925. The state bedroom itself is a sight to behold. Adorned with opulent tapestries and featuring a four-poster bed, it exudes elegance and luxury. The room reflects the grandeur of Palladian architecture prevalent during its time. Through this photograph, we are transported back to the early 18th century when Normanton Park stood as an impressive stately home in Leicestershire, England. Its destruction may have erased its physical presence from our world, but thanks to images like these captured by English photographer Giles Worsley (1961-2006), we can still appreciate its beauty. This print serves as a reminder of the rich history that lies within England's lost houses. It invites us to imagine what life must have been like within those walls and encourages us to cherish and preserve our architectural heritage for future generations.
