EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print, we are transported back to the 19th century, where chaos and humor collide in a Victorian house invaded by foxhounds. The scene unfolds as a member of the local fox hunt, sans his trusty steed, finds himself amidst an uproar caused by mischievous hounds. Illustrated by John Leech for Handley Cross; or, Mr. Jorrocksas Hunt. a by Rs Surtees and published in London in 1854, this image captures the essence of a time long gone. The vibrant colors bring to life the emotions felt within the room - shock, anger, and horror etched on the faces of men and women alike. The once serene living room has transformed into a battleground between domestic life and animal instincts. As we observe this snapshot from history, it becomes evident that problems arise when cultures clash. British culture is deeply rooted in fox hunting traditions while others find it to be an act of harassment towards animals. This clash is portrayed through the displeased expressions worn by those witnessing this invasion. Amidst all the commotion stands our central figure - a hunter dressed in traditional clothing representing upper-class society at that time. His failure to control these unruly hounds highlights both his own ineptitude and perhaps even questions the morality behind blood sports. Through Linda Steward's skillful rendering of this engraved illustration turned cartoon-like image, we are reminded not only of past lifestyles but also prompted to reflect upon issues such as animal welfare that
