Machynlleth, town clock
The clock is a landmark in the centre of Machynlleth. It was built by the residents of Machynlleth to celebrate the coming of age of the eldest son of the Fifth Marquess of Londonderry, who lived at Y Plas. Charles Stewart Vane-Tempest (Viscount Castlereagh) turned 21 on 16 July 1873, but family bereavement put paid to the planned celebrations. A year later, on 16 July 1874, the clocks foundation stone was laid amid general festivities

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Machynlleth town clock, a true landmark in the heart of this Welsh town. Standing tall and proud, it represents not only the passage of time but also a significant moment in history. The clock was constructed by the residents themselves to commemorate the long-awaited coming of age of Charles Stewart Vane-Tempest, Viscount Castlereagh, eldest son of the Fifth Marquess of Londonderry. Originally planned as an extravagant celebration for his 21st birthday on July 16,1873, unfortunate family circumstances prevented its realization. However, determined not to let their efforts go to waste, one year later on July 16th, 1874, amidst joyous festivities and jubilation from locals and visitors alike, the foundation stone for this magnificent timepiece was finally laid. The architectural style is unmistakably Gothic Revival - intricate details adorn every corner while exuding an air of grandeur that perfectly complements its historical significance. This photograph by David Williams beautifully captures both the craftsmanship and essence of this remarkable structure. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded not only of Machynlleth's rich heritage but also how communities can come together to create something enduringly beautiful. It serves as a testament to human resilience and determination in commemorating important milestones even amidst adversity.
