EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning altarpiece, dating from the 1480s, depicts the Entombment of Christ, a significant event in the Passion of Christ as recounted in the New Testament. The Passion narrative tells the story of Christ's suffering, from his arrest to his Crucifixion, and was a popular theme for altarpieces in northern Europe during the 15th century. In this work of art, Christ's body is being carried by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, while the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and other mourning women follow behind. The Madonna, with her serene expression, stands at the left, her hands raised in prayer. The gold leaf and rich colors add a sense of grandeur and reverence to the scene. The altarpiece, which is believed to be from Germany or the Netherlands, is an oil painting on panel and measures approximately 145 cm x 195 cm. It is currently housed in the Notre Dame du Folgoet museum in France, where it is a cherished piece of heritage art, attracting visitors from around the world. The Passion of Christ was a significant concept in Christian theology, representing the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ for the salvation of humanity. This altarpiece provides a powerful and moving depiction of the Entombment, inviting reflection and contemplation on the profound themes of motherhood, sacrifice, and the enduring love of God.
