Britannia-the Unprotected Female!!, 1859
Britannia-the Unprotected Female!!, November 26, 1859. Rumours of the invasion of Britain by France abounded. Mr Punch agreed that preparations were being made for self-defence and approved the notion that the English fleet should exceed the united fleets of France and Russia. Furthermore, continuing efforts to improve recruitment to the volunteer force should be made. The French may consider Britannia to be an unprotected female, but this cartoon presents a truer picture. Britannia is depicted as a muscle-bound and vigorous man, seated on the edge of a cannon and with a gun in one hand, and a sword in the other. He has a shield resting against his thigh and the British bulldog at his feet. There are bayonets to suggest other troops at his shoulder and at the bottom right, another cannon. His keen eyes are looking out over the Channel towards France and his whole demeanour suggests that he is ready and able should the French attempt any offensive. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 26, 1859

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Britannia-the Unprotected Female!!, 1859" captures the essence of national pride and strength during a time of uncertainty. In November 1859, rumors were rife about France's potential invasion of Britain, causing anxiety among the British population. However, this cartoon from Punch magazine challenges the notion that Britannia is an unprotected female. In this powerful image, Britannia is portrayed as a muscular and vigorous man rather than a vulnerable woman. Seated on the edge of a cannon with a gun in one hand and a sword in the other, he exudes confidence and readiness to defend his homeland. A shield rests against his thigh while the iconic British bulldog stands faithfully at his feet. The artist skillfully includes bayonets to suggest additional troops standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Britannia, emphasizing their united front against any potential threat. With keen eyes fixed upon the Channel towards France, Britannia's determined demeanor leaves no doubt that he is prepared for any offensive action by the French. This cartoon serves as both political commentary and propaganda during a period when recruitment efforts for volunteer forces were being encouraged. By depicting Britannia as an embodiment of strength and resilience, it aims to inspire patriotism among its viewers. Overall, "Britannia-the Unprotected Female!!, 1859" showcases how art can convey powerful messages about national identity and defense preparedness even in times of perceived vulnerability.
