This print captures a pivotal moment in American history - the Confederate ironclad Merrimac sinking the USS Cumberland in 1862. In an audacious attempt to break through the Union blockade, the Merrimac proved its formidable power by successfully sinking two Union ships off Hampton Roads, Virginia. However, it was during its epic nine-hour battle with the Union's armored ship Monitor that naval warfare would be forever transformed. The outcome of this historic clash was inconclusive, as neither vessel could inflict serious damage upon the other. Yet, their encounter marked a turning point in maritime combat. The image showcases the innovative nature of this new era of warfare and highlights how technology played a crucial role in shaping conflicts.
