The Dead Christ with Angels, 1866-1867. Creator: Edouard Manet (French, 1832-1883)
The Dead Christ with Angels, 1866-1867. Similar to a painting the artist exhibited at the Salon of 1864, The Dead Christ with Angels is Manets largest etching and exists in only a few impressions. The print accurately translates the realism of Christs fleshy body, an effect that prompted critics of the painting to complain that the figure was vulgar. As with lithography, Manet used etching in a new, expressive manner, and varied marks were used to delineate the subject. While short lines conform to the muscular bodys curves, a dense network of parallel lines describes the feathers of the angels wings. In the lighted areas at the top of the image, there are also a few bold, crudely crosshatched lines

The Dead Christ with Angels, 1866-1867
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the artistic brilliance of Edouard Manet. This particular etching, which happens to be his largest, is a rare gem as it exists in only a few impressions. Manet's mastery lies in his ability to translate realism onto paper, evident in the accurate depiction of Christ's fleshy body. However, this attention to detail and lifelike portrayal sparked controversy among critics who deemed it vulgar. Nevertheless, Manet fearlessly pushed boundaries and used etching as an expressive medium. The artist employed varied marks to bring out different aspects of the subject matter. Short lines gracefully follow the contours of Christ's muscular form while a dense network of parallel lines meticulously describes the feathers on the angels' wings. The play between light and shadow is also skillfully captured through bold and crudely crosshatched lines at the top of the image. This print not only highlights Manet's contribution to impressionism but also showcases his unique approach to art-making during the 19th century. It serves as a testament to his innovation and willingness to challenge conventional norms within French art circles. Displayed by Heritage Art/Heritage Images from The Cleveland Museum of Art collection, this piece invites viewers into Manet's world where realism meets expressionism in perfect harmony.
