Three Goddesses, c. 1595. Creator: Jan Saenredam (Dutch, 1565-1607)
Three Goddesses, c. 1595. Goltzius popularized a style of engraving with mesmerizing patterns of curving, tapering, and crisscrossing lines; it was especially appreciated in the late 1500s. Designed for his pupil Saenredam to engrave, these prints depict the three goddesses from the tale of The Judgment of Paris, in which each claimed the golden apple to be awarded to the most beautiful. Jupiter deferred judgment to Paris, a mortal esteemed for his fair-mindedness. Juno and Athena tried to bribe Paris with an empire and skill in war, but Venus made him an offer he could not resist: Helen, the worlds most beautiful woman. The presentation of the deities in separate prints suggests that viewers may also play Pariss role and decide themselves which goddess the artists made most beautiful

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jan Saenredam's engraving of "Three Goddesses" created around 1595. Inspired by the mesmerizing patterns popularized by Hendrick Goltzius, this artwork features curving, tapering, and crisscrossing lines that add a sense of enchantment to the piece. The subject matter stems from the ancient tale of The Judgment of Paris, where three goddesses vied for the title of most beautiful. In this narrative, Jupiter defers judgment to Paris, an esteemed mortal known for his fair-mindedness. Juno and Athena attempt to sway Paris with promises of power and skill in war respectively. However, it is Venus who ultimately captures his attention by offering him Helen - widely regarded as the world's most beautiful woman. Interestingly, Saenredam presents each deity in separate prints within this collection. This deliberate choice allows viewers to assume Pariss role themselves and decide which goddess they perceive as being portrayed as the most beautiful. Dating back to the late 16th century when these engravings were made, they exemplify Dutch artistry during that era. Created by Jan Saenredam under Goltzius' guidance, these prints showcase their mastery in capturing intricate details through engraving techniques. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art in the Netherlands today, this Heritage Art photograph immortalizes Saenredam's interpretation of The Judgment of Paris for all art enthusiasts to appreciate and engage with its timeless beauty.
