From the 14th century Dubrovnik was an independent city state, but it fell to Napoleon in 1808, after which the city passed to Austrian administration in 1815 and Yugoslavian in 1918. Dubrovnik was bombarded by the Serbs during Croatias struggle for independence in 1991-1992

Following the fall of the Roman Empire, Byzantine rule took over until Dubrovnik flourished as a prominent trading power and became a hub for Slavic art and literature from the 15th to 17th centuries. Throughout its existence, Dubrovnik experienced various shifts in governance. It gained independence as a city-state in the 14th century but succumbed to Napoleon's forces in 1808. Subsequently, Austrian administration prevailed from 1815 until Yugoslavian control commenced in 1918. Unfortunately, during Croatia's struggle for independence between 1991-1992, Serb bombardment targeted Dubrovnik.
