Menshikov in Berezovo (a study), 1881, (1965). Creator: Vasily Surikov
Menshikov in Berezovo (a study), 1881, (1965). Sketch for a picture of the same name of 1883. Russian statesman Alexander Danilovich Menshikov (1673-1729) was a close supporter of Peter the Great, and under Catherine I he was the de facto ruler of Russia. Menshikov arranged the engagement of his daughter Maria to Peter the Greats grandson Peter II. In 1727, however, he was accused of state treason and stealing from the Treasury, and he and his family were exiled to Berezov (now Berezovo, Tyumen Oblast), where he died. He sits and broods in a cramped and gloomy peasant hut (izba) with mica window panes. His son Alexander and eldest daughter Maria, the former fiancee of Peter II who is dying of tuberculosis, look similarly despondent. Only the younger daughter, Alexandra, who is reading the Gospel aloud, brings a note of optimism. Painting in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. From " Russian Painting of the 18th and 19th Centuries" by Vladimir Fiala. [Artia, Czechoslovakia, 1965]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a poignant moment in Russian history, depicting the study of Vasily Surikov's famous painting "Menshikov in Berezovo". The subject of the artwork is Alexander Danilovich Menshikov, a prominent statesman who played a significant role during Peter the Great's reign. In this scene, Menshikov finds himself exiled to Berezovo after being accused of state treason and theft from the Treasury. Seated inside a cramped peasant hut with mica window panes, Menshikov appears deep in thought and brooding. His son Alexander and eldest daughter Maria share his despondency as they face uncertain futures. Maria, once engaged to Peter II but now suffering from tuberculosis, reflects on her fading dreams. Amidst this gloomy atmosphere, there is one glimmer of hope - Alexandra, Menshikov's younger daughter. She sits reading aloud from the Gospel, bringing an element of optimism to their dire circumstances. The photograph showcases Surikov's masterful portrayal of emotions through his use of light and shadow within the rustic setting. It serves as a reminder not only of Menshikov's personal tragedy but also highlights the complexities and uncertainties faced by those who held power during Russia's tumultuous history. This particular print can be found at Moscow's State Tretyakov Gallery where it stands as a testament to both Surikov’s artistic talent and historical significance.
