Rabelais, 1882

Rabelais, 1882. Francois Rabelais (c1495-1553) was a French writer, satirist, humanist, doctor and monk. Born at Chinon in Touraine, he is best remembered as the author of the romance La Vie de Gargantua et de Pantagruel (The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel) which appeared in four volumes between 1532 and 1552. A fifth work appeared posthumously in 1554 but is of doubtful authenticity. These four comic novels tell the story of the giants Gargantua and Pantagruel. The style is coarse, ribald and exuberant, and the use of language imaginative. The English language owes two adjectives to Rabelais: Gargantuan - of tremendous size or volume, huge appetites and Rabelaisian - coarse, robust, bawdy humour. A print from The Magazine of Art Vol V, Cassell, Peter, Galpin and Company, Limited, 1882

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Francois Rabelais, a renowned French writer, satirist, humanist, doctor, and monk. The image portrays Rabelais as a man of intellect and wit, with his piercing gaze and thoughtful expression. Born in Chinon in Touraine around 1495, Rabelais is best known for his masterpiece "The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel" a series of four volumes published between 1532 and 1552. Rabelais' literary works were characterized by their coarse yet exuberant style, filled with imaginative language that left a lasting impact on the English language. His creations gave birth to two adjectives still widely used today: "Gargantuan" to describe something immense or voracious in appetite, and "Rabelaisian" to denote humor that is robustly bawdy. This print from The Magazine of Art Vol V (1882) showcases the statue-like representation of Rabelais created by Pierre Eugene Emile Hebert. It beautifully captures the spirit of this influential figure who seamlessly blended satire with humanism while exploring themes such as religion, science, medicine, and social commentary. As we admire this portrait frozen in time from the late 19th century perspective on an iconic figure from the 16th century France's cultural landscape emerges—a man whose legacy continues to inspire writers and thinkers even centuries after his death.
