Atherton Leisure Centre, Romford Road, Forest Gate, Newham, Greater London. The oculus in the dome of the entrance hall of Atherton Leisure Centre, formerly the West Ham Municipal Baths.
The foundation stone of the West Ham Municipal Baths was laid in 1932. The baths were opened in 1934 and closed in 2011. The building was demolished in around 2013 and was replaced with a modern leisure centre

This print captures the grandeur of the Atherton Leisure Centre, formerly known as the West Ham Municipal Baths, located in Forest Gate, Newham, Greater London. The focal point of this magnificent entrance hall is undoubtedly the oculus nestled within its dome. Dating back to 1932 when its foundation stone was laid, this architectural gem served as a hub for sport and recreation until its closure in 2011. The intricate stained glass window surrounding the oculus allows natural light to filter through, creating an ethereal ambiance that bathes the space below. The ceiling light above casts a warm glow on visitors entering this once bustling leisure center. Sadly, time took its toll on this historic building and it was demolished around 2013. However, thanks to Simon Inglis' lensmanship and Historic England's preservation efforts, we can still admire and appreciate this stunning piece of history. As we gaze upon this photo print, we are transported back in time to an era where swimming pools were more than just places for exercise; they were community gathering spots filled with laughter and joy.
