EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the ABC cinema, located on Fishergate in Preston, Lancashire. Taken between 1982 and 1986 by photographer Norman Walley, it offers a glimpse into the history of this iconic building. The ABC cinema first opened its doors in 1959, replacing the former Theatre Royal that had stood on the same site since 1802. A testament to modern movement architecture, this structure underwent refurbishment in 1973 to include a pub within its premises. However, despite these efforts to adapt with changing times, both the cinema and pub were forced to close their doors in 1982. The image showcases not only the grandeur of this once-thriving entertainment venue but also hints at its eventual fate. In 1986, as depicted here through Walley's lens, demolition took place to make way for what would become known as Fishergate retail development. Through this photograph print from Historic England's collection, viewers are transported back in time to witness an important chapter in Preston's architectural heritage. It serves as a reminder of how buildings can evolve over time while still leaving behind traces of their past glory. The significance lies not only in preserving memories but also understanding how our urban landscapes continuously transform with progress and changing societal needs
