He joined the staff of the Vatican Library in 1816, eventually rising to become its Prefect in 1840. Mai's scholarly pursuits ranged from patristics and liturgy to history and archaeology, and he is best known for his groundbreaking work on the authenticity of the "Donation of Constantine," a controversial document that purported to grant the Pope temporal power over the Western Roman Empire. Despite the challenges and distractions of his administrative duties, Mai continued to publish prolifically throughout his career, producing over 500 scholarly articles and 30 books.
