EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolour painting depicts the Aristotelia serrata, also known as the wineberry tree, a native plant of New Zealand and Australia discovered during Captain James Cook's first voyage across the Pacific Ocean from 1768 to 1771. The painting was created by the renowned English botanical artist Fred Polydore Nodder based on an original outline drawing by Sydney Parkinson. The Aristotelia serrata is an angiosperm, a type of flowering plant, belonging to the order Oxalidales and the family Elaeocarpaceae. It is a dicot, meaning it has two seed leaves, and is classified as an eudicot, a subgroup of dicots. This tree is also a member of the Rosid clade, which is the largest clade within the rosidid subgroup of the eudicots. The tree is characterized by its glossy, evergreen leaves and clusters of small, white flowers. The fruit of the Aristotelia serrata is a berry, which is edible and has a sweet, wine-like taste, hence the common name 'wineberry'. The tree is also known for its medicinal properties, with traditional uses in New Zealand and Australia for treating various ailments. This painting is a testament to the remarkable discoveries made during Captain Cook's voyage, which significantly expanded European knowledge of the natural world. Sydney Parkinson's original outline drawing was made during the expedition, and Fred Polydore Nodder's finished watercolour brings the intricate details of the Aristotelia serrata to life, capturing the beauty and importance of this remarkable plant in the natural history of the Pacific region.
