EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of hope and healing at the Quex Park VAD Hospital in Birchington-on-Sea, Kent, during World War I. Established on October 15, 1914, by the Kent/178, Birchington Detachment, the hospital was run by the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), providing medical care, rehabilitation, and recuperation for wounded Belgian soldiers. The Commandant of the hospital was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940), who was the founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum located at Quex Park. The hospital closed its doors on January 31, 1919. The serene seaside setting of Birchington-on-Sea offered a respite from the chaos and destruction of the war, allowing soldiers to recover in a peaceful environment. The VAD staff, dressed in their distinctive uniforms, work diligently to care for the Belgian patients, their faces reflecting a mixture of compassion and determination. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the vital role that volunteer organizations and individuals played in providing essential medical care and support for soldiers during wartime.
