EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Bon Adrien Jennot, Duke of Moncey (1754-1842), a prominent French military commander during the revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. Moncey's military career spanned over five decades, making him a significant figure in French military history. Born in Dijon, France, Moncey joined the French army in 1771 and quickly rose through the ranks. He gained fame during the French Revolution, particularly for his victory at the Battle of Montenotte in 1796, where he commanded the French forces against the Austrians. Moncey's success continued under Napoleon Bonaparte, who appointed him as the governor of the Military School of Meudon in 1802 and later made him a duke in 1808. Moncey's military prowess was not limited to Europe. He also played a crucial role in the French colonization of Haiti, where he served as the governor-general from 1803 to 1805. However, his tenure in Haiti was marked by rebellion and conflict, and he was ultimately forced to leave the island. Despite his successes, Moncey's military career was not without controversy. He was accused of treason during the Bourbon Restoration and was exiled to England. However, he was eventually pardoned and returned to France, where he continued to serve in various military and political capacities until his death in 1842. This print captures Moncey in his later years, with a stern expression and military uniform adorned with numerous decorations. The intricate details of his uniform and the rich colors of the print transport us back to the Napoleonic era, offering a glimpse into the life of a remarkable military commander and historical figure.
