EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of Count Albert Pouilly Mensdorff, Austro-Hungarian Ambassador to London at the onset of the First World War. Born in 1861, Count Mensdorff-Pouilly-Diechstrichstein was a skilled diplomat and a beloved figure within London's aristocratic circles. He was not only a second cousin to King Edward VII but also enjoyed a close friendship with the future King George V. As tensions escalated in Europe during the July crisis of 1914, Count Mensdorff found himself in an increasingly precarious position. Despite his influential connections and popularity, he was not privy to the full extent of Austrian plans leading up to the war. Ultimately, he was forced to leave London following the declaration of war on August 12, 1914. The image of Count Mensdorff, with his prominent moustache and formal attire, serves as a poignant reminder of the complex web of diplomacy and political alliances that characterized Europe on the eve of the Great War. His story underscores the intricacies of international relations during this tumultuous period and the far-reaching consequences of the decisions made by world powers.
