EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking diagram from 1941 offers a comparative analysis of the major aircraft carriers of the rival navies during World War II. As the war entered its third year, the aircraft carrier had emerged as a pivotal weapon in naval warfare, providing long-range strike capabilities and the ability to project power across vast distances. In the upper left corner, we see the Japanese carrier Akagi, the largest and most powerful carrier in the Imperial Japanese Navy at the time, with a displacement of over 33,000 tons and a capacity for 61 aircraft. Below it is the Shokaku, another Japanese carrier, slightly smaller but still formidable, with a displacement of 27,000 tons and a capacity for 48 aircraft. On the right side of the diagram, we find the American carriers Enterprise and Saratoga. The Enterprise, the first US aircraft carrier commissioned, had a displacement of 16,800 tons and a capacity for 36 aircraft. The Saratoga, commissioned in 1927, had a displacement of 23,000 tons and a capacity for 81 aircraft. The British carriers, represented by the Illustrious and Victorious, were also formidable. The Illustrious, commissioned in 1939, had a displacement of 23,000 tons and a capacity for 48 aircraft. The Victorious, commissioned in 1939, had a displacement of 23,000 tons and a capacity for 42 aircraft. This diagram offers a snapshot of the naval capabilities of the major powers during World War II, highlighting the impressive size and firepower of these vessels. The aircraft carriers represented here played a crucial role in the Pacific and Atlantic theaters, shaping the outcome of the war at sea and in the air.
