EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a tender moment between the Duchess of Edinburgh, Grand Princess Maria Alexandrovna (1853-1920), and three of her four daughters. The Duchess, who was the eldest daughter of Tsar Alexander II of Russia, is seen here with Princess Beatrice (1884-1966), who would later become the wife of Alfonso XIII of Spain; Princess Victoria Melita (1876-1936), known as Ducky, who would marry Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia; and Princess Alexandra (1878-1942), who would marry Prince Friedrich of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. The Duchess's fourth daughter, Princess Irene, is not present in the photograph. The image, taken by an unknown photographer, captures the natural affection between the Duchess and her daughters, with the youngest, Princess Alexandra, playfully resting her head on her mother's shoulder. The Duchess's elegant and regal bearing is evident, as is her loving and nurturing nature towards her children. The photograph also provides a glimpse into the opulent surroundings of the royal family, with the ornate furnishings and grand decor of the room adding to the sense of grandeur and luxury. The Duchess of Edinburgh played an important role in the British royal family, serving as the wife of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, and later becoming the grandmother of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Her life was marked by tragedy, as she lost three of her children at a young age, and her eldest son, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, was killed in a boating accident in 1899. Despite these challenges, she remained a devoted mother and grandmother, and this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of her love and devotion towards her family.
