EDITORS COMMENTS
In this stunning ancient Egyptian relief, the gods Thoth and Anubis are depicted in the Temple of Luxor at Thebes, a city once known as the "City of the Living" and the cultural heart of ancient Egypt. Thoth, the god of wisdom, magic, and the moon, is shown with the head of an ibis, a long-legged wading bird native to Egypt. He holds a scepter in one hand and an ankh, the symbol of life, in the other. Thoth was also considered the god of writing and scribes, making him an essential deity in the administration of the pharaoh's kingdom. Anubis, the god of mummification and the dead, is shown with the head of a jackal, an animal revered in ancient Egypt for its role in burying and protecting the dead. Anubis is depicted holding the symbol of his power, the Ankh-cross, and wearing a nemes headdress, a symbol of royalty. Anubis was believed to guide the dead on their journey to the afterlife and to protect graves from desecration. This magnificent bas-relief, carved into the sandstone walls of the Temple of Luxor, showcases the intricate detail and masterful craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian art. The relief also provides a glimpse into the rich mythology and religious beliefs of the ancient Egyptians, whose civilization flourished from approximately 3100 BC to 332 BC. The Temple of Luxor, dedicated to the Theban Triad of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu, is a testament to the architectural and artistic achievements of this ancient civilization. The perspective of the relief, with Thoth and Anubis standing in front of a columned hall, adds to the grandeur and majesty of this historical monument.
