Arctos Bear Cuvier Dictionary Frederic Gabriel Maritimus Polar Pretre Stipple Ursus Vulnerable
EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is an exquisite representation of two iconic bear species, the European Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) and the Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus), taken from Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, published in Paris, France, in 1816. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was expertly executed by Carnonkel, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The European Brown Bear, also known as the Eurasian Brown Bear, is depicted in its natural habitat, surrounded by lush vegetation. This powerful and majestic creature is the largest terrestrial carnivore in Europe, and is an important keystone species in its ecosystem. The Polar Bear, on the other hand, is shown in its arctic environment, standing on the ice floes. This vulnerable species, with its distinctive white fur, is a top predator in the Arctic ecosystem, and is well adapted to its harsh environment. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the natural history of these magnificent bears, but also highlights the artistic and scientific achievements of the early 19th century. The intricate stipple engraving technique, combined with the vibrant handcoloring, brings the bears to life, capturing their essence and beauty in a way that continues to captivate and inspire us today.
