EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of The Follies, a pierrot troupe that brought popular entertainment to the stages of South London in the late 1890s. Founded in 1895, the troupe began as an amateur group of entertainers who performed at charity events. Harry Gabriel Pelissier, a member of the group, bought the rights to the troupe and renamed it Pelissier's Follies. Their first professional appearance was at Aberystwyth, Wales, with Pelissier serving as both the manager and leading performer. The Follies were known for their satirical sketches that poked fun at contemporary drama, opera, and Shakespeare productions. The pierrot costumes, with their white faces, black eyes, and red lips, added an air of mystery and whimsy to the performances. The troupe's revues were a huge success, and they quickly gained a devoted following. John Hassall's photograph captures the spirit of The Follies in this intriguing image. The pierrot performers are seen backstage, preparing for their next act. The atmosphere is one of anticipation and excitement, as the performers adjust their costumes and make final preparations. The photograph provides a rare glimpse into the world of theatrical production in the late 1890s, and serves as a reminder of the enduring appeal of popular entertainment. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of The Follies and the role they played in the development of modern theatre. It is a fascinating glimpse into the past, and a reminder of the power of the arts to entertain, inspire, and bring people together.
