1586 1656 Calixtus Georg Lutheran Theologian

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black and white portrait captures the stern yet intellectual visage of Georg Calixtus (1586-1656), a prominent German Lutheran theologian of the 17th century. Calixtus was born in Wittenberg, the same city where Martin Luther had initiated the Protestant Reformation a century earlier. He studied theology at the University of Wittenberg and went on to hold various prestigious academic positions throughout Germany. Calixtus is best known for his role in the bitter theological disputes that divided the Lutheran Church during the 17th century, particularly the controversy over the nature of the Eucharist. He advocated for a more moderate position, known as the "Gnesio-Lutheran" view, which sought to maintain a balance between the more radical Reformers and the more traditionalist Lutherans. Despite his efforts to promote unity within the Lutheran Church, Calixtus found himself embroiled in numerous controversies and debates. He was a prolific writer and scholar, producing numerous theological treatises and commentaries on the Bible. His most famous work, "Explicationes Quinquaginta Capitulorum," is a comprehensive commentary on the Fifty Articles of the Lutheran Confession. Despite the controversies and debates, Calixtus remained committed to the cause of Lutheran orthodoxy and played a significant role in shaping the theological landscape of the Lutheran Church during the 17th century. This portrait, with its solemn expression and scholarly attire, serves as a testament to Calixtus's dedication and intellectual rigor.
