1135 1154 Stephen Vertue

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the regal presence of King Stephen of England (1097?-1154), who ruled from 1135 to 1154. Known for his strong personality and complex reign, Stephen was a pivotal figure in British history. Born as the third son of Henry I, Stephen initially played a supporting role in his brother's reign. However, upon Henry's death in 1135, Stephen seized the opportunity to claim the throne for himself. His claim was based on a letter supposedly written by Henry I, granting Stephen the succession if his older brother, William Adelin, died before him. This became known as the "Letter of Silence," as Henry I had reportedly issued it in secret. Stephen's reign was marked by instability and conflict, as he faced challenges from various quarters. The most significant opposition came from Matilda, the daughter of Henry I, who claimed the throne based on her own right to rule. This period, known as the Anarchy, saw civil war and political upheaval. Despite these challenges, Stephen remained a respected figure, known for his personal virtues and his efforts to maintain peace and order. He was a patron of the arts and learning, and his court was a center of intellectual and cultural activity. In this portrait, King Stephen is depicted in regal attire, with a serious expression and a commanding posture. His royal insignia, including the scepter and orb, symbolize his power and authority. The image captures the essence of a monarch who faced adversity but remained steadfast in his rule, leaving a lasting impact on the history of England.
