EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1914, Lady Drogheda, nee Kathleen Moore Pelham Burn, is seen enjoying a day of falconry with Prince Henry of Pless and his eldest son, both named Hans Heinrich, on the golf course at Cannes. Lady Drogheda married the 10th Earl of Drogheda in 1909 but divorced him in 1922 to wed Guillemo Delanda, a polo player. A passionate sportswoman, she excelled in tennis at Wimbledon and even learned to fly. Prince Henry of Pless, born in 1861, was one of the wealthiest heirs in the German Empire. He was the father of two sons and a daughter. His eldest son, Hans Heinrich, eventually succeeded him. The trio's shared interest in falconry brought them together on this sunny day in the French Riviera. The elegant Lady Drogheda, dressed in a stylish hat and long coat, holds a falcon on her gloved hand while Prince Henry and his son look on. The prince, wearing a formal suit and holding a falcon, exudes an air of regal authority. His son, wearing a sweater and trousers, displays a youthful excitement as he prepares to handle the bird. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these aristocratic figures during a time of peace before the looming shadows of World War I. The image captures the spirit of sport, adventure, and the opulence of the European aristocracy on the French Riviera.
