Leicesters Roman remains excavated, 1936

Drawing by Alan Sorrell of excavations in progress in the city of Leicester in 1936 led by Kathleen Kenyon. The excavated Roman remains were initially thought by Kenyon to be a Roman forum, with the Roman-era Jewry Wall beside the site part of a basilica. However, later excavations showed that the site was probably a bath complex and the Jewry Wall part of that. The Illustrated London News in 1937 reports the find as the forum. Date: 1936

EDITORS COMMENTS
This drawing by Alan Sorrell depicts the ongoing archaeological excavations in the historic city of Leicester, England, in the year 1936. Led by the esteemed archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon, the team meticulously uncovered Roman remains that were initially believed to be the ruins of a grand Roman forum. The Illustrated London News reported the discovery in 1937, describing the site as a "Roman Forum unearthed in Leicester." However, further excavations carried out in the following years revealed that the site was more likely to have been a Roman bath complex. The nearby Jewry Wall, an impressive Roman-era structure that can be seen in the background of the drawing, was initially thought to be part of a basilica in the forum. Yet, it was later determined that it was in fact an integral part of the bath complex. The discovery of these Roman remains in Leicester brought immense excitement to the archaeological community and the public alike. The site provided valuable insights into the Roman occupation of Britain and added to the rich heritage of the city. Today, the Jewry Wall remains a popular tourist attraction and a testament to the fascinating history of Leicester. This evocative image by Alan Sorrell captures the spirit of discovery and the dedication of the archaeologists as they delved into the past, uncovering the secrets of a Roman bath complex hidden beneath the streets of this vibrant British city.
