EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the Chinese pangolin, Manis pentadactyla, a critically endangered mammal native to China and other parts of Asia. The short-tailed pangolin, Manis brachyura, is also depicted in this image. Pangolins, often referred to as scaly anteaters, are the only known mammals covered in keratin scales. In this illustration, the Chinese pangolin is shown curled up into a protective ball, a common defense mechanism against predators. The Chinese pangolin, also known as the Harriet's pangolin, is named after Harriet, Countess of Powis, who was an influential figure in the natural history community during the early 19th century. This engraving is taken from Edward Griffiths' seminal work, "The Animal Kingdom," published in London by Whittaker in 1825, and was produced by the skilled hand of T. Bradley. The meticulous attention to detail in the illustration allows us to appreciate the intricacies of the pangolin's unique scales and physical features. Sadly, the Chinese pangolin and other pangolin species are currently under immense threat due to poaching for their scales, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine, and their meat, which is considered a delicacy in some Asian countries. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified both the Chinese pangolin and the short-tailed pangolin as critically endangered. It is crucial that we raise awareness of the plight of these fascinating creatures and work towards their protection and conservation.
