EDITORS COMMENTS
This handfinished chromolithograph by Henry Noel Humphreys, created after an illustration by Jane Loudon for her book "Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials," published in London in 1849, showcases a stunning array of Convolvulus and Ipomaea species. The intricately detailed print features the American Convolvulus, or kidney-leaved Convolvulus (Convolvulus sepium americanus, also known as C. reniformis), with its distinctive kidney-shaped leaves and purple-blue flowers. Adjacent to it is the Bryony-leaved Convolvulus (C. bryoniaefolius), characterized by its heart-shaped leaves and pink flowers. Further along, the Potato Vine (Ipomaea pandurata) is depicted with its trailing stems adorned with arrow-shaped leaves and clusters of pink flowers. Nearby, the Sagittate-leaved Ipomaea (I. sagittifolia) is displayed, its arrow-shaped leaves with distinctive notches and white flowers adding to the vibrant palette. The American Convolvulus and the Ipomaea species are part of the morning glory family, Convolvulaceae, and are known for their twining stems and beautiful, often fragrant, flowers. These ornamental perennials were popular in Victorian gardens and continue to be cultivated for their attractive foliage and blooms today. The meticulously crafted chromolithograph by Humphreys and Loudon captures the essence and allure of these enchanting plants, making it a valuable addition to any botanical collection.
