The Mint, Southwark

The Mint was a district in Southwark, south London, England, on the west side of Borough High Street, around where Marshalsea Road is now located. It was so named because a mint authorised by King Henry VIII was set up in Suffolk Place, a mansion house, in about 1543. Date: 1875

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image transports us back in time to The Mint, a historic district located on the west side of Borough High Street in Southwark, South London, around where Marshalsea Road is now situated. The name 'The Mint' is derived from the royal mint that was established in Suffolk Place, a magnificent mansion house, in approximately 1543 by King Henry VIII. The Mint was a significant area during the Tudor period, with Suffolk Place serving as the site for the production of the country's currency. The district was renowned for its bustling activity, with the sound of hammers striking coins echoing through the streets. The area was also home to a thriving community, with a mix of residents, including merchants, artisans, and the less fortunate, who sought refuge in the nearby Marshalsea Prison. This photograph, taken in 1875, captures the essence of The Mint's rich history and vibrant character. The image shows a narrow, cobblestone street lined with tall, red-brick buildings, their windows adorned with iron bars. At the end of the street, the imposing facade of Suffolk Place can be seen, a testament to the district's storied past. The horse-drawn carts and carriages add to the sense of bustling activity, while the people going about their daily business add a touch of humanity to the scene. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique insight into the history and character of The Mint, a district that once played a crucial role in the economic and social fabric of Southwark and London as a whole.
