Step back in time with this evocative photograph of the Golden Anchor Public House in Clerkenwell, London. The image captures the charming facade of the pub, with its ornate brickwork and distinctive sign bearing the iconic Golden Anchor insignia. The pub, located at 14-16 Clerkenwell Close, EC1V 4LY, was once a beloved local watering hole and gathering place for the community. The Golden Anchor was part of the vast Charrington and Company Limited brewery empire, which dominated the London beer scene from the late 19th century until the mid-20th century. The pub's history can be traced back to at least the early 19th century, making it a cherished piece of Clerkenwell's rich history. Unfortunately, the Golden Anchor, like many historic pubs, was not immune to the relentless march of progress. By July 2018, the pub had been demolished, leaving only memories and photographs like this one to preserve its legacy. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the past, inviting us to raise a virtual glass to the Golden Anchor and the stories it once held within its walls.
