EDITORS COMMENTS
In this portrait, we behold the visage of Roman Emperor Theodosius II, who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire from 401 to 450 AD. This evocative image is a copperplate engraving, taken from Abraham Bogaerts' seminal work, "De Roomsche Monarchy," published in Utrecht during the 17th century by Francois Salm. Theodosius II, also known as Flavius Theodosius Junior Augustus, was the eldest son of Emperor Arcadius and his wife Eudoxia. He ascended to the throne at a young age following his father's death and ruled alongside his mother and regent, Pulcheria, until her death in 453 AD. The emperor is depicted here in imperial regalia, wearing a diadem adorned with pearls and precious stones, a loros (a long, richly decorated cloak), and a chlamys (a military cloak). He is identified by the inscription in the lower left corner of the print, which reads "Theodosius II, Nobilissimus Caesar, Western Emperor, Consul II, Daciae, Naiso, Urbis, Constantius." Theodosius II is remembered for his efforts to strengthen the Eastern Roman Empire and maintain peace in the face of barbarian invasions. He also played a significant role in the Council of Chalcedon, which established the orthodox Christian doctrine on the nature of Christ. This exquisite copperplate engraving, with its intricate details and masterful shading, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and majesty of the Roman imperial court during the late antique period. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Caesars and Kaisers, whose rule left an indelible mark on the course of Western civilization.
