EDITORS COMMENTS
Quince, Cydonia oblonga (Syn. Cydonia vulgaris), is a deciduous tree in the rose family, native to the Caucasus and western Asia. This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Dr. Willibald Artus' Hand-Atlas sammtlicher mediinisch-pharmaceutischer Gewachse (Handbook of all medical-pharmaceutical plants), published in Jena, Germany, in 1876, captures the beauty and intricacy of the quince tree in remarkable detail. The image showcases various aspects of the quince plant. At the center, a fully bloomed quince flower is depicted, its petals unfurled in delicate elegance. Surrounding the flower are several quince leaves, their serrated edges and glossy green surface faithfully rendered. Above, a quince fruit hangs from a branch, its golden-yellow hue and distinctive texture captured with great precision. Quince has been cultivated for its fruit, which is not eaten fresh but rather cooked or used in jams and jellies. The fruit is high in pectin, making it an excellent thickener for preserves. Quince was also used in ancient times for medicinal purposes, particularly for treating digestive issues and sore throats. The meticulous handcolouring and engraving techniques employed in this print serve to highlight the botanical accuracy and artistic merit of the image, making it a valuable addition to any botanical or herbal collection. This illustration is a testament to the beauty and versatility of the quince plant, as well as the skill and artistry of the 19th-century botanical illustrators.
