EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of respite for Australian Mounted Troops as they make their way through the main street of Es Salt, Jordan during the First Transjordan Attack on Amman in 1918. Es Salt, located 15 miles northeast of the Ghoraniyeh crossing of the Jordan River and 4,000 feet above the river, served as a crucial strategic location during the First World War's Middle Eastern campaign. The First Transjordan Attack on Amman, also known as the First Battle of the Jordan, took place between March 21st and April 2nd, 1918. The Australian Mounted Troops, part of the Eastern Cavalry, are seen here in a relaxed pose, a brief moment of normalcy amidst the chaos of war. The troops are likely making their way to or from the battlefield, where they faced off against the Ottoman Turkish and German forces. This photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of the Australian soldiers during their time in the Middle East, highlighting their courage and determination in the face of adversity.
