EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary Queen of Scots, in this engraving by Baker, tenderly presents her newborn son, James, to the world. Mary, the Scottish monarch, is depicted in regal attire, her expression filled with love and pride as she cradles her infant heir. The baby James, later to become King James VI of Scotland and I of England, gazes up at his mother with innocent curiosity. This poignant moment captures the deep bond between mother and child, as well as the weight of responsibility that rests upon the shoulders of the newborn king. Mary Queen of Scots, born in 1542, was the only legitimate child of King James V of Scotland. Her reign was marked by political instability and conflict, including multiple attempts on her life. In 1565, she married the Earl of Bothwell, who was later accused of her husband's murder. This marriage and the subsequent scandal led to Mary's abdication in 1567. She was imprisoned in Lochleven Castle and eventually forced to abdicate in favor of her one-year-old son, James. Mary escaped from prison in 1571 and spent the next 14 years in exile in England, where she was eventually imprisoned by her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. Mary was eventually tried and executed in 1587, but her legacy lived on through her son, who would go on to unite the crowns of Scotland and England. This beautiful print, created by the skilled hand of Baker, captures a rare moment of joy and hope amidst the tumultuous reign of Mary Queen of Scots. The image of mother and child serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring bond between them, as well as the weight of responsibility that rested upon the shoulders of the young king.
