EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning tapestry, titled "Disembarkation in Asilah," is the first piece in the series of the Pastrana Tapestries, created between 1471 and 1475. Commissioned by Alfonso V of Portugal, these tapestries chronicled the conquest of Asilah and Tangier in North Africa. This particular tapestry depicts the Portuguese troops disembarking from their ships, ready to begin their campaign. The tapestry was most likely manufactured in Tournai, Belgium, in the workshop of Passchier Grenier, a renowned Flemish artist of the time. The intricate details of the Portuguese soldiers' armor and uniforms, as well as the realistic depiction of the ships and the African coastline, are characteristic of Flemish art during the Late Middle Ages. The Pastrana Tapestries are an exceptional example of the decorative arts from the Western European Early Modern Era. They are currently housed in the Collegiate Tapestries Museum in Pastrana, Spain, in the region of Castile-La Mancha, Guadalajara. These tapestries are a testament to the artistic and historical significance of the Flemish textile industry during the late 15th century and provide valuable insights into the European exploration and conquest of Africa during this period. The intricate weaving and vibrant colors of the tapestry showcase the skill and craftsmanship of the Flemish weavers, making it a valuable addition to any collection focused on Western history, early modern era, decorative arts, textiles, or fabric making. This tapestry also highlights the cultural exchange between Europe and Africa during this time and is a reminder of the rich history that connects the two continents.
