EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Boeing XB-47D Stratojet 51-2103 (msn 450176) graces the sky as the Wright XT49 test-bed in the mid-1950s. Originally built as a Boeing B-47B-30-BW Stratojet, this aircraft underwent significant transformations in December 1954, when it was converted into an XB-47D test-bed for the Wright XT49 turboprop. The XT-49 was an intriguing turboprop development of the Wright J65 engine, which was a license-built and developed Armstrong-Siddeley Sapphire. The J65 engine was rated at an impressive 10,400 shaft-horsepower. This powerful engine was installed to evaluate its potential for use in military aircraft, marking a departure from the jet engines that had become synonymous with the Stratojet series. The conversion of the XB-47D from a jet-powered bomber to a turboprop test-bed was a significant undertaking. The aircraft's designation was changed to EB-47B in April 1952, and the conversion to the XB-47D test-bed began in December 1954. The first flight of the XT-49 occurred on August 26, 1955, making this photograph a testament to the groundbreaking aviation advancements of the era. This image showcases the versatility and adaptability of the Boeing Stratojet, as well as the ongoing research and development efforts in the field of aviation technology during the 1950s. The XB-47D's transformation into the XT-49 test-bed paved the way for future turboprop applications in military aviation.
