EDITORS COMMENTS
In this beautiful photograph, Princess Tatiana Konstantinovna of Russia (1890-1970) is seen smiling radiantly next to her fiancé, Prince Konstantin Bagration-Mukhransky. The year was 1911, and the young princess had just become engaged to the dashing prince, who was not of equal birth to her. At the time, this was considered a significant scandal in Russian high society, as the rules of aristocratic marriage dictated that individuals should only marry within their own class. However, Tsar Nicholas II, the ruler of Russia, was known for his liberal views on marriage and granted permission for the union between Tatiana and Konstantin. The couple's engagement was met with controversy and criticism from some quarters, but they were undeterred and looked forward to a happy future together. Unfortunately, their plans were cut short when World War I broke out in 1914. Konstantin, who had joined the army, was killed in action in 1915, leaving Tatiana a widow at the young age of 25. This poignant photograph captures a moment of joy and hope in the midst of the turmoil and uncertainty of the early 20th century, and serves as a reminder of the love story that unfolded between Princess Tatiana Konstantinovna and Prince Konstantin Bagration-Mukhransky. Despite the tragic ending to their story, Tatiana went on to live a long and active life, dedicating herself to charitable work and supporting various humanitarian causes. She was a beloved figure in Russian society, and her memory continues to be cherished by those who knew her and by history enthusiasts around the world.
