Goddess Isis Lorum Priestess Principal Sash Spalart Tunic Dalmatic

EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Robert von Spalart's Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages (1796), showcases two Roman men elegantly dressed in the traditional dalmatic tunics and lorums. The dalmatic, a long, sleeveless tunic, was an essential garment in the Roman Empire, particularly for clergy and high-ranking officials. The lorum, a wide sash, was worn draped around the waist and secured with a brooch, adding a touch of grandeur to the outfit. Intriguingly, this scene also features a priestess of the ancient Egyptian goddess Isis. Isis, one of the most widely revered deities in the Roman Empire, was often depicted wearing a distinctive headdress adorned with the horns of a cow and a solar disk. Her priestesses, as seen here, wore elaborate garments that included a long, flowing robe and a headpiece adorned with the symbols of the goddess. The intricate details of the engraving, from the intricate folds of the robes to the delicate patterns on the priestess's headdress, provide a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and cultural diversity of the ancient world. The blending of Roman and Egyptian influences in this image reflects the complex interplay of ideas and traditions that shaped the art, religion, and society of the ancient Mediterranean world.
