Supermarine

EDITORS COMMENTS
Supermarine 508, VX136: A Pioneering Flight into the Realms of Aviation History This photograph showcases the iconic Supermarine 508, registration number VX136, a historic aircraft that played a pivotal role in the development of British aviation. The Supermarine 508 was a two-seat, single-engine, monoplane transport aircraft, designed and manufactured by the Supermarine Aviation Works, a subsidiary of Vickers-Armstrongs, in the late 1930s. The aircraft in this image, VX136, was the first Supermarine 508 to be built and the prototype for the series. It made its maiden flight on 21 January 1938, piloted by test pilot J. L. "Mutt" Summers. The aircraft's distinctive streamlined design, advanced aerodynamics, and powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine made it a trailblazer in its class. The Supermarine 508 was intended for use by the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a transport and communication aircraft, capable of carrying up to six passengers or a payload of 1,500 pounds. However, due to the outbreak of World War II, the aircraft was repurposed for military use, primarily as a communications and liaison aircraft. This photograph captures the Supermarine 508, VX136, in its element, soaring through the skies with grace and power. The image serves as a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the aviation industry during this era, and the pivotal role that the Supermarine 508 played in shaping the future of aviation technology.
