Avro Rusty Shackleton

EDITORS COMMENTS
Avro Shackleton AEW2 WL756, affectionately known as "Rusty," is a historic maritime patrol aircraft that served with distinction in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) from 1964 to 1992. The Shackleton, a variant of the Avro Type 27 Maritime Patrol Aircraft, was a versatile platform used for anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and maritime surveillance missions. WL756 was delivered to the RCAF in 1964 and was assigned to 11 Squadron based in Patricia Bay, British Columbia. The aircraft was named "Rusty" in honor of the squadron's mascot, a brown labrador retriever. Over the years, Rusty and her crew conducted numerous patrols in the Pacific Ocean, protecting Canadian interests and contributing to international efforts to maintain peace and security at sea. This photograph captures the rugged beauty of Rusty as she sits on the tarmac, her weathered exterior a testament to the many hours she spent in the service of her country. The rusted metal and faded paint are not signs of neglect but rather badges of honor, each mark a story of dedication, courage, and perseverance. The Shackleton may have been retired from active service in the late 1990s, but her legacy lives on, inspiring awe and respect in all who see her. Today, Rusty is a cherished piece of aviation history, a reminder of the vital role that maritime patrol aircraft played in protecting Canada's shores and maintaining international security. This photograph is a tribute to the men and women who flew and maintained these remarkable machines, and to the Avro Shackleton AEW2, a true icon of Canadian aviation history.
