This evocative 17th century print depicts the pivotal moment in the Catalan Revolt, also known as the Reapers War, which took place in Barcelona, Spain between 1640 and 1652. The city was besieged both from land and sea by the formidable armies of King Felipe IV, determined to quell the rebellion that had begun as a protest against heavy taxes and political oppression. The image shows Barcelona, a thriving and modern city in the early modern era, under siege and surrounded by the vast forces of the Spanish monarch. The sea, once a vital lifeline for the city, is now a dangerous barrier, with enemy ships blocking the harbor and preventing supplies from reaching the beleaguered population.
