On 8 July 1981 more than 1, 000 young people besieged the police station at Moss Side, Manchester. During this a policeman was shot with a crossbow bolt through his leg.
The riot lasted for some 72 hours over three nights, with much burning and looting of shops all the way down Princess Road, Clarendon Road and the surrounding areas, including Rusholme. It ended on 11 July when the Manchester police went in hard. At the time the Manchester Police forces were the only force in Britain kitted out with full riotsquad gear

In July of that year, over 1,000 young individuals besieged the police station in Moss Side, Manchester. Amidst the chaos, a brave policeman was struck by a crossbow bolt through his leg. For three consecutive nights spanning 72 hours, riots ravaged the streets of Moss Side and its surrounding areas. Shops were set ablaze and looted along Princess Road and Clarendon Road all the way to Rusholme. The unrest finally came to an end on July 11th when Manchester police took decisive action against the rioters. Notably equipped with full riot squad gear at the time, they stood as Britain's sole force prepared for such intense situations. In this photograph, we see Mrs Dacacodia alongside Mr Benet Hytner QC Chairman leading the inquiry panel established to investigate these devastating riots.
