Coal - Phurnacite Plant - Abercwmboi - Aberaman. *POLLUTION at the controversial
Coal - Phurnacite Plant - Abercwmboi - Aberaman. *POLLUTION at the controversial Phurnacite plant was so bad it more than doubled the risk of workers developing cancers. Specialists have made that claim at the Royal Courts of Justice in London where the High Court is hearing expert testimony after weeks of witness statements in Cardiff from former workers. In one of the final large- scale coal industry compensation actions, more than 300 ex-workers are seeking compensation for their ill health ranging from respiratory diseases to multiple cancers claiming they were caused by working at the National Smokeless Fuels plant at Abercwmboi, in the Cynon Valley, before it closed in 1991.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the haunting reality of pollution at the controversial Phurnacite plant in Abercwmboi, Aberaman. The image serves as a stark reminder of the detrimental effects that industrial practices can have on both human health and the environment. The Royal Courts of Justice in London became a platform for specialists to shed light on the alarming consequences faced by workers at this coal plant. Shockingly, it was revealed that these employees were more than twice as likely to develop cancers due to their exposure to hazardous substances within the facility. Former workers from this ill-fated National Smokeless Fuels plant have come forward seeking compensation for various illnesses ranging from respiratory diseases to multiple types of cancer. Over 300 individuals are partaking in one of the final large-scale coal industry compensation actions, highlighting the magnitude and severity of their suffering. The closure of this plant in 1991 marked an end to an era tainted by environmental negligence and disregard for worker safety. However, this photograph serves as a poignant testament to those who endured years of toxic conditions while laboring within its walls. As we reflect upon this image captured on October 28th, 1988, let us acknowledge not only its historical significance but also recognize our responsibility towards creating safer work environments and protecting our planet from such devastating pollution.
