Learning to look after pets are the Guides from the 7th Mirfield unit with Mr Rex Burton, who tested the girls taking their " Friends of Animals" badge. They are, from left, Fiona Robinson, Angela Falkingham, Susan Brook, Kathryn Duffy and Amanda Barker. To get their badges the girls had to prove that they could look after their pet and would know what to do if the animal fell ill, and how to contact a vet. The pets evening was held at the Christ the King parish rooms, Battyeford. 19th June 1985

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this heartwarming print from 1985, we see the Guides from the 7th Mirfield unit learning valuable lessons about pet care under the watchful eye of Mr Rex Burton. These young girls, Fiona Robinson, Angela Falkingham, Susan Brook, Kathryn Duffy, and Amanda Barker are determined to earn their "Friends of Animals" badge by demonstrating their ability to responsibly look after their pets. The dedication and enthusiasm radiating from these bright-eyed children is truly inspiring. They have spent countless hours learning how to properly care for their furry friends and understand what steps to take if an animal falls ill. Their commitment goes beyond just feeding and grooming; they have also learned how to contact a veterinarian in case of emergencies. This special pets evening took place at Christ the King parish rooms in Battyeford - a perfect setting for these eager learners. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as each girl showcased her knowledge and skills while bonding with her beloved pet. As we reflect on this snapshot from the past, it serves as a reminder that teaching children compassion towards animals is an essential part of their development. It's evident that these Guides not only gained practical skills but also developed empathy and responsibility through this experience. This photograph captures a beautiful moment in time when young minds were being shaped into caring individuals who would go on to make positive contributions to society – all thanks to Mr Rex Burton's guidance and the Girl Guide program's emphasis on nurturing love for our four-legged companions.
