EDITORS COMMENTS
For years, this fine Ironstone mining ambulance served an unexpected purpose as a home for chickens. However, its fate took a turn when it was lovingly restored to its former glory and now proudly stands as a centerpiece in Skinningrove's Tom Leonard Mining Museum. Once driven by Lesley Fall, the horse-drawn ambulance had previously served in Durham pits before finding its way to the ironstone mine at Brotton in 1938. After being discovered by Tom Leonard himself in a garden at Saltburn, it had been repurposed as a chicken coop until its rescue. In 1984, trainees at ICI Wilton undertook the task of restoring this historical gem. With meticulous care and attention to detail, they brought back the splendor of yesteryears. Now fully revived, this remarkable carriage serves not only as an attraction but also as an educational tool for visitors eager to learn about our rich industrial history. The significance of this restoration extends beyond mere transportation; it symbolizes the resilience and adaptability of our mining communities. It stands tall amidst other artifacts within The Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum - reminding us all of our shared heritage and the hard work that shaped our region. This print captures not just an ambulance turned chicken coup turned museum exhibit but also represents the triumphs achieved through dedication and passion for preserving our past.
