The youngest and oldest fireman in No. 36. Fire Force area met at Loughton fire station

The youngest and oldest fireman in No.36. Fire Force area met at Loughton fire station on the day that
Fireman Richard Salter, aged 71, of Albert Road, Buckhurst Hill, went into retirement.
The youngest fireman", Charlie Fickllng, tried to enlist in the NFS at Tottenham when only seven years
of age and was advised to return when he was a little bit older.
Charlie accordingly waited until he was a week older and then went back, to offer his services again.
So the Tottenham Fire station fitted him up with a little blue uniform and " adopted him as their mascot.

The Youngest and Oldest Fireman - A Historic Meeting at Loughton Fire Station

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from 1944, we witness a heartwarming encounter between the youngest and oldest fireman in the No. 36 Fire Force area. The occasion was none other than the retirement of Fireman Richard Salter, aged 71, who had served his community faithfully for many years. The youngest fireman present is Charlie Fickllng, whose determination to serve began at an incredibly tender age. At just seven years old, he attempted to enlist in the NFS at Tottenham but was advised to wait until he was older. Undeterred by this setback, Charlie returned a week later with unwavering enthusiasm and was promptly adopted as their mascot by the Tottenham Fire station. Dressed in a little blue uniform that perfectly matched his youthful spirit, Charlie became an emblem of hope during these challenging times. This photograph captures not only the stark contrast between generations but also highlights the resilience and camaraderie within our emergency services during World War II. It serves as a poignant reminder of how individuals from all walks of life came together to protect their communities amidst conflict. Preserved through time by George Greenwell's lens, this image encapsulates both humor and admiration for those who selflessly served on the home front during one of history's darkest chapters. Let us honor their bravery while cherishing memories like these that remind us of our shared humanity across generations.
