EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the serene beauty of Lanherne Convent, nestled in the picturesque village of St Mawgan in Pydar, Cornwall. Taken in the early 1900s, it showcases a grotto adorned with a statue of Our Lady, radiating an aura of tranquility. Lanherne Convent has a rich history dating back to the 16th century when it served as the Manor House for the esteemed Arundell family. Sir John Arundell, a prominent Catholic figure during that time, called this enchanting place home. The manor later became a sanctuary for numerous priests seeking refuge from religious persecution during the Reformation. In 1794, Lanherne was generously bestowed upon the Carmelite nuns who have since maintained its sacred legacy. Today, it continues to function as an active convent under their devoted care. The photographer responsible for capturing this ethereal image remains unknown; however, their lens skillfully portrays not only the architectural grandeur but also highlights the spiritual significance that permeates every corner of Lanherne Convent's grounds. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to Cornwall's rich heritage and offers viewers an opportunity to glimpse into its past—a moment frozen in time where faith and history intertwine harmoniously within these hallowed walls.
