Tregothnan Lodge, Churchtown, St Michael Penkivel, Cornwall. Probably early 1900s
A view of the gate house, Churchtown. Four young girls are standing hand-in-hand looking at the camera and a man is walking along the drive towards the lodge. Tregothnan has been home to the Boscawen family since 1334. The house was rebuilt by Edward Boscawen (1787-1841), fourth Viscount and First Earl of Falmouth, near the site of an older mansion. Tregothnan has the largest historic garden in Cornwall. It is open to the public for one weekend every year. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a glimpse of the enchanting Tregothnan Lodge in Churchtown, St Michael Penkivel, Cornwall. Taken in the early 1900s by photographer Arthur William Jordan, it offers a timeless view of this historic estate. In the foreground, four young girls stand hand-in-hand, their innocent gazes fixed upon the camera. Their presence adds an element of youthful charm to the scene. Meanwhile, a man strolls along the picturesque drive towards Tregothnan Lodge. His purposeful stride suggests he is intimately connected to this grand residence. Tregothnan has been cherished by generations of the Boscawen family since 1334 when they made it their home. The house itself was reconstructed by Edward Boscawen (1787-1841), who held titles as Viscount and Earl of Falmouth. Situated near its predecessor's location, Tregothnan stands as a testament to centuries-old heritage. Notably, Tregothnan boasts Cornwall's largest historic garden—a horticultural masterpiece that continues to captivate visitors today. Although access is limited throughout most of the year, one weekend annually opens up this hidden gem for public exploration. The gatehouse depicted in this image serves as an inviting entrance into Tregothnan's world of beauty and history—an invitation extended through time via this remarkable photograph from Royal Cornwall Museum archives.
