The east side of Polzeath beach, St Minver, Cornwall. 1907

Pentire Point from the area of Polzeath beach marked on the 1908 Ordnance Survey maps as Crockett Haven. There are two people paddling in the sea and a number of people on the rocks above. The steps to the right of the picture lead up to an area then known as Pentireglaze, but now known as New Polzeath. The name change to New Polzeath was probably to reflect the housing development that has taken place over the decades since this photograph was taken. Photographer: Herbert Hughes

EDITORS COMMENTS
The East Side of Polzeath Beach: A Glimpse into Cornwall's Coastal Charm". Step back in time to the year 1907, as captured by the lens of renowned photographer Herbert Hughes. This remarkable print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the east side of Polzeath beach, nestled in St Minver, Cornwall. The image transports us to a bygone era when life moved at a slower pace and nature reigned supreme. The focal point is Pentire Point, majestically rising from the azure waters like a guardian sentinel. From this vantage point on Crockett Haven, one can witness two figures paddling joyfully in the sea, their laughter carried away by gentle ocean breezes. Meanwhile, perched upon weathered rocks above them are several individuals captivated by both land and sea. To the right of this idyllic scene lies a set of steps leading towards an area once known as Pentireglaze but now recognized as New Polzeath—a testament to how time transforms landscapes and communities alike. It is believed that this name change was prompted by extensive housing development over subsequent decades since Hughes immortalized this moment. Cornish coastal heritage comes alive through every element within this photograph—endless stretches of golden sand merging with rugged cliffs adorned with seaweed-draped rocks. The allure of these shores has long attracted visitors seeking solace amidst nature's grandeur. As you gaze upon this snapshot from yesteryears, let your imagination wander along those timeless shores where waves whisper secrets and salty air fills your lungs with untamed freedom. Join us on a journey through history and immerse yourself in Cornwall's coastal charm—an enchanting tapestry woven between land and sea.
